November 17th -23rd is
National Game and Puzzle Week!
We would be remiss if we didn’t celebrate this most noteworthy week as a game company. (And it’s just a fun week!)
First things first..
On Friday, November 22nd, our church is hosting a game night and we will be heading it up. It starts at 6:30 and goes until 10:30 at High Point Church here in Madison, WI. Bring your board games, game safe snacks (see the Game Safe Snacks? post from May) and as many friends that will fit in your car! We are going to have some fun on Friday! I think I even heard that we will have some DnD games going as well as playing the game that captured about 18 of us last time, called Just One. David and I usually bring about 30 of our games for people to enjoy. Come join us!!
Second things second…
I thought I would give my top 5 favorite games that you should try out this week. (or at least soon!)
5. Carcassonne: David has a TON of expansions for this game. And some of the expansions consist of 5 tiles. That’s it! We were given Mists Over Carcassonne a year or so ago and have love playing it. The idea is that you build out an area one tile at a time placing robbers, farmers, and knights as you go – all which earn you end-game points. In the Mists game, you have to deal with ghosts that multiply FAST! This version is a cooperative game — and thank goodness because those ghosts are fast!
4. Aqualin: This is a fairly new game for 2 that I got on a whim. We were at the Gaming Hoopla convention in Illinois (which is moving to Milwaukee, WI this year) and they have an auction that supports cancer research. I always buy games because I love that gaming can raise awareness and money like this. Anyway… I got it and when we played it was AWESOME! It’s kind of a Chess meets Candy Crush meets Othello meets an aquarium. Love love love!!
3. Wingspan: As a aspiring birder, this game makes me so happy! It seems difficult but it is actually fairly simple in the mechanic. For each of your turns you place a bird, feed your birds, lay an egg, or draw cards. The birds have different powers and when you do one of those four things it activates some of them and you get to do cool things. My favorite are the birds that get activated on other people’s turn. I’m hoping that the cute wooden birds will show up under the Christmas tree this year so I can play with the blue jays, penguins, flamingos or owls. Try it. You’ll love it!! (Oh… and invite me over to play with you!!! I’m there for you!)
2. Tetris: That’s right. It’s a board game! It literally stands up and you have to put the pieces in and make complete lines or meet goals. Seventeen thumbs up!
1. Dominion: This deck building game is maybe an all-time favorite. David likes to describe it as a ‘middle-ages shopping game’ where you shop for cards to get money and then land. This game is super fun to create a ‘machine’ that strings multiple cards together to get you lots of Platinum (money!) or Colonies (land!). ~Word of advice if you ever play with my brother, buy your land early and try and go out early. Once his machine goes, he always wins in like 2 turns. It’s both frustrating and impressive!
Ok, so I could have done my top 50 or 100 but I stuck with 5. These 5 also change quite often.
What would you like to play?
