The Luck: Legends of Ireland
Kickstarter will run from
June 18 - July 9
Our prelaunch page will be out by the end of March with pre-order goodies if you sign up for the newsletter and pledge!
Each player begins in the pub, ready to head out on an adventure, with no wits and three Luck in their pocket. Now, choose your path.
Do you head to Blarney Castle to see if you have the Gift of Gab? Do you seek out Saint Patrick to hear how he taught about the Holy Trinity using the shamrock? Do you play your hand at trying to find the White Stag to receive a coveted wish?
You choose!
Once you are on your way, you will land on spaces that bring to life folklore, legends, and fun facts about Ireland. Maybe you will get Luck for having spiders in your house! If you are really lucky, Lia Fail will sing to proclaim you the next ruler of Ireland! But be careful. If the grogoch helps you with chores, they are very clumsy and may break things. And watch out for the Lake Dragon! If Saint Kevin isn’t around, he won’t be able to talk that dragon out of a tasty meal!
Oh… and the characters you meet along the way will make your adventures exciting! They may earn you more Luck, make dance at a fairy party, or make you run for your life! They are quite a troop. Let’s meet some of them!
In Irish folklore, fairies are beautiful creatures who are very persuasive. They live in fairy mounds that you can still see in the Irish countryside. While these little beauties seem delicate and playful, watch out!
They love to dance. And when you dance with them, before you know it years have gone by and you have grown older without noticing. (That is where you lose up to 3 turns!) However, if they like the tune you play, you may come out of your encounter looking and feeling younger! (This is where you can get up to 3 extra turns!)
Yes, their butts are painted. How else are you going to tell your sheep apart from your neighbors? While these cuties have different personalities that make them unique (and color-blind friendly), they tend to wander… a lot. You will have to find your sheep often.
As you are searching in the pasture for your sheep, make sure you don’t mistakenly find the Pooka.
What is a Pooka? I’m glad you asked!
The Pooka is a mischievous shapeshifter who ruins crops and likes to hang out with the sheep. If you should happen to find the Pooka instead of your sheep, that is not lucky at all! (And he is scary!)
The Salmon of Wisdom is a wise old fish. He will offer you the wits you need to catch those shifty Leprechauns. If a Leprechaun offers you a bottle of fairy wine, be careful! It will put you to sleep so that he can escape. Then, no gold for you.
What will the wise salmon say?
Why, never accept a drink from a Leprechaun, of course!
(Deep thoughts brought to you by The Salmon of Wisdom)
It is said that the ghosts of the wives of sailors who were lost at sea still linger around Ireland and are called Banshees. They are an omen of death. If you hear their wailing, it means that someone’s time is drawing short. These ladies are NOT lucky!
Fortunately, Saint Patrick has some Good News for you that will keep you from having to fear them!
The mini games at the top of each shamrock leaf get the whole gang playing along.
To find out if you have the Gift of Gab, see if you can fool your fellow travelers in a game of Two Facts and a Fib. If you can fool at least one of them and get them to believe your fib is a fact, a Gabber, you are! You receive a stone from Blarney Castle that helps you win the wagers at the Pub.
Visiting Saint Patrick will mean a choice between receiving some Luck to share with charity or giving up your Luck in return for your very own shamrock! The shamrock represents your faith that death is not the end, and the banshees are nothing to fear. If you encounter a banshee, you just keep movin’ on! See ya, lady!
If you have a keen eye, you may want to see if you can find the White Stag. While one of your opponents hides the stag in their hands, you choose the right one to win the prize …or is it the left one? Gaining a coveted Wish will let you roll again, take another turn, or mess with an opponent by adding one to their die roll. What will you Wish for?
The best part is getting back to the Pub is sharing your adventure. This is where you tell tales of how Finn McCool bested you… just barely. And how you had to fight off the Vikings while the potato blight was ravaging your fields. But when your true love was led home by a magic harp, it made it all worth it.
If you want to play it safe and bank your earnings, the Pub is the place to keep it safe. But, if you think your tale could use some embellishing, wager some of the Luck you earned along the way, and roll to see if the locals believe you. If you are lucky, you can double that wagered Luck! However, if your roll isn’t quite enough, you could lose it all. Then choose your next path and set out on another adventure.
The first one to score 60 Luck is THE LUCKIEST PERSON IN IRELAND (and the winner of the game!) …though your fellow travelers get one last chance to out wager you.
