Defeat monsters with everyday household objects, break the curse with scripture verses,  and out-maneuver the Zombie with some fancy footwork. It’s up to you to decide if you will work together or go-it alone and keep all the money you find for yourself.

FAQ's

Angels

Can two angels occupy the same room or the same space? Yes. They all get along just fine.

Which room can I search when the Messenger Angel heals me? You pick any room in the mansion that has Search cards. You can take two cards from the same room or one card from two different rooms.

Which room can I clear of monsters when the Guardian Angel heals me? Choose any room that has one or more monster tokens in it.

If no wounded or dead players are in the same room as my angels, do I need to roll the yellow die? Usually, no. However there is one exception: If the Disembodied Spirits card is in effect and any of your angels are on the same floor as a wounded or dead player, you must roll the yellow die and move them during step 3 of your turn.

If a wounded or dead player lands on one of my angels, are they healed? If a wounded or dead player lands on one of your angels, they are not healed until step 3 of YOUR turn. On step 3 of YOUR turn, each of the players on the same space as your angel can use the angel’s strength and then the angel returns to Cloud Nine.

Black Spaces

What are the black spaces? The black spaces are the dark areas surrounding the white path in the Attic, and the two black squares next to the B staircase in the Upstairs part of the board.

How do the black spaces work? There is a typo in the first edition of the rule book. (Congratulations, you own a collector’s edition!) The description of the black spaces should say, “The black spaces in the Attic and the Upstairs are off limits to players, monsters, angels, and the Zombie. You may not move any pawns, tokens, or movers onto black spaces.”

Clock Strikes Cards

Disembodied Spirits

While the Disembodied Spirits card is in effect, can the Zombie walk through walls? No. The Zombie is not a monster.

While the Disembodied Spirits card is in effect, can dead players walk through walls? No. Dead players are not monsters. (They’re just dead-ish!)

Can disembodied spirits walk through doors? Yes. While the Disembodied Spirits card is in play, monsters and angels can walk through locked or unlocked doors, except for the doors to the Front Porch and the Back Porch. (It’s too scary in the real world!)

Does the Disembodied Spirits card allow monsters and angels to enter black spaces, the Front Porch, or the Back Porch? No

Mysterious Potion

Does the Mysterious Potion card let me attack a player who is behind a locked door? Yes. All movement rules are ignored when choosing a player to attack with the Mysterious Potion card. The potion transports you to the other player magically.

After I fight someone using the Mysterious Potion card, can I remain on that space and trade cards with that player or fight them again?  The instructions on the Mysterious Potion card are carried out before the pawn movement part of your turn, so you can choose to remain on that space and trade cards or fight according to normal rules for landing on a player, but the plus 2 bonus on the card no longer has any effect.

Locks

After I unlock a door, can I enter the room on the same turn? If you unlock a door at the start of your turn, you can use your white doll roll to move into the room. If you unlock a door at the end of your turn, your move is over so you must wait until your next turn to enter the room.

Can I try to unlock two doors on the same turn? Yes, if you start and end your turn on a lock. Since you can try to unlock door at the start or end of your turn, if you start your turn on a lock, you can try to unlock that door, then use your white die roll to move to another lock, and end your turn by trying to unlock that door. This called Brian’s Rule, in honor of a particularly clever lockpicker. (Thanks, Brian!) You could also use this rule to make two attempts to unlock the same door by not moving on your turn, but if you unlock it on your second attempt, your pawn movement is over so you cannot enter until your next turn.

Monsters

Can two monsters occupy the same room or the same space?  Yes

If I have multiple monster cards, do I roll the red die for each? No. If you have any monster cards, roll the red die once during step 2 of your turn and use that number to move all of your monsters that are in the same room as a live player. If the Disembodied Spirits card is in effect, also use that same number to move any of your monsters that are on the same floor as a live player.

If no live players are in the same room as my monsters, do I need to roll the red die? No, with two exceptions:

  1. If the Disembodied Spirits card is in effect and any of your monsters are on the same floor as a live player, you must roll the red die and move them during step 2 of your turn.
  2. If you have the Bat of the Vampire card and both of those monsters are in the mansion, you must roll the red die during step 2 of your turn to see if they switch places.

If someone enters a room occupied by one of my monsters, do I roll the red die? If a live player enters a room occupied by one of your monsters, the monster does not move until step 2 of YOUR turn. Your monsters only move on your turn, and other players’ monsters only move on their turn.

If I move through or land on the Creature from Outer Space, can I try to attack it? Yes. Roll the red die once for each of your blue Search cards that is not a money $ card. On a red die roll of 0, the Creature from Outer Space is defeated.

Wounds

Can I get more than 3 wounds? No. If you are attacked by multiple monsters on the same turn, first defeat any of the monsters you can. Next, take wounds. When you have taken a third wound, any remaining monsters consider you dead and do not attack. (No getting any dead-er-er!)

Can a live player give another player a wound when they win a fight? No. The only way a live player can give another player a wound is by drawing the Mysterious Potion card and winning the fight.

Zombie

Does the Zombie move on every turn? No. The Zombie only moves during step 2 on the turns of the player who drew the Zombie card.

If the Zombie mover is physically closer to one player’s pawn but another player is closer to a secret passage, which player will he pursue? The Zombie must pursue the player he can reach using the fewest number of movement points, so if a secret passage gives him a shorter route to reach a player, that is the route the Zombie will pursue. The same rule applies to staircases. You may have to count out multiple routes to figure out the shortest route that the Zombie can take.

If I fall through a trapdoor, will the Zombie follow me? The Zombie doesn’t understand how trap doors work, so if Zombie is pursuing you and you fall through a trapdoor, the Zombie will ignore the trap door and pursue the closest player it can reach without using a trap door, or if all players are now behind locked doors and there are no secret passages he can use to get to them, the Zombie will not move. However, if the Zombie happens to end his movement on a trap door after moving 4 spaces, the Zombie will fall through the trap door.

Search Cards

Dog Card

Can the dog use secret passages and trap doors? The dog can use secret passages. He’s got a good nose for finding things! He cannot use trap doors. Dogs don’t always land on their feet.

If the dog is carrying the Skeleton Key card, can he go through locked doors? If you own a dog that can unlock doors, then by all means… go for it! (And we would like to meet your fuzzy friend!) Otherwise, no.
